With Michigan State's 2013 Big 10 Championship season that culminated with a win over Stanford in the 2014 Rose Bowl, the Spartans added to their legacy of success in the Grandaddy of all bowl games.

Michigan State Rose Bowl History

Michigan State's January 1, 2014 contest against Stanford marked the program's fifth time to represent the Big 10 at the Rose Bowl. Previous Rose Bowl appearances for the Spartans were achieved following the 1953, 1955, 1965 and 1987 seasons.

January 1, 1954 - Michigan State 28 UCLA 20

The 1953 season marked the first time that the Spartans played a full Big 10 schedule after having joined the league in 1950. Michigan State finished the regular season with an 8-1 record. A 0-6 loss at Purdue was the only blemish on their record. Although Head Coach Clarence "Biggie" Munn announced his retirement before the game, Sparty prevailed with a win. Halfback Billy Wells was named as the game's MVP.

January 2, 1956 - Michigan State 17 UCLA 14

A crowd of 100,809 gathered to see Michigan State face the UCLA Bruins in the 42nd Rose Bowl. Spartans halfback Walt Kowalcyzk earned Player of the Game honors as the Big 10 representatives edged the Bruins 17-14. Head Coach Duffy Daugherty led the 8-1 Spartans that also featured quarterback Earl Morrall.

January 1, 1966 - Michigan State 12 UCLA 14

Although the Coach Duffy Daugherty led Spartans arrived in Pasadena with an unblemished 10-0 record, the top rated Spartans fell to the 7-2-1 UCLA Bruins. Michigan State was a 14-point favorite, but the Bruins prevailed as UCLA defensive back Bob Stiles was named the Rose Bowl Player of the Game.

January 1, 1988 - Michigan State 20 USC 17

Head Coach George Perles guided the 8-2-1 No. 8 ranked Spartans as 101,688 fans converged on the 74th Rose Bowl Game. In a game that was dominated by the defenses, the Spartans Percy Snow was named MVP as he led the charge against the Trojans offense led by QB Rodney Peete. The victory culminated an awesome season that saw Michigan State defeat Michigan and Ohio State on their way to winning the Big 10 by 1 1/2 games.

January 1, 2014 - Michigan State 24 Stanford 20

The Big 10 Champion 12-1 Spartans traveled to Pasadena with the nation's No. 4 ranking to take on an 11-2 Stanford squad that was ranked 5th with an 11-2 record.

After spotting the Cardinal a 10-0 lead at the end of the 1st quarter, Michigan State dominated the final three quarters as the Spartans won the 100th Rose Bowl by a 24-20 score. The game's MVP's were MSU QB Connor Cook (offense) and Spartans LB Kyler Elsworth (defense).
