Reports indicate that fans were so excited with the invitation, that classes were cancelled. With free time on their hands, students stormed the state capitol and demanded that the state's governor lead the singing of the university song. Despite the excitement surrounding the bowl bid, Head coach Biff Jones' team lost to Stanford 21-13.

With the 2001 BCS Championship on the line, Nebraska faced the Miami Hurricanes in the 2002 Rose Bowl which was played on January 3, 2002. The red-clad fans left disappointed that afternoon as Miami led 34-0 at the half and cruised to a 37-14 victory.
